EDI FAQs
Have questions about EDI? Below are answers to some common questions:
1. What is EDI and why is it important for our partnership?
EDI stands for Electronic Data Interchange. With EDI, these documents can be digitally transmitted, eliminating the need for manual work or downloading from the legacy portal within Retail Link. This streamlined process ensures greater accuracy and speed of communication between Walmart and its suppliers. By using EDI, companies can automate many of their business processes, improving efficiency and reducing errors.
2. Why is Walmart implementing changes to the direct import EDI system?
At Walmart, we strive to be the retailer of choice for our suppliers. Over the past two years, we have emphasized our commitment to driving transparency, predictability, and simplicity in our business relationships. The update to our direct import EDI system is a crucial step in our journey to empower our suppliers, streamline processes, and foster mutual growth. For suppliers who serve both domestic and direct import business models, you will now enjoy a simplified experience with Walmart in our streamlined way of working starting from PO Management.
3. How does the EDI adoption align with Walmart's goals for suppliers?
The enhancement of our direct import EDI system is directly aligned with our goal of making operations more efficient, cost-effective, and customer centric. By leveraging EDI technology, we aim to provide suppliers with a platform that promotes transparency, minimizes errors and enhances collaboration. This change is part of our broader vision to create a seamless and mutually beneficial relationship where suppliers can thrive and grow alongside Walmart. Our goal is to empower suppliers to succeed in a rapidly evolving marketplace while delivering exceptional values to our customers.
4. How does this change benefit suppliers and contribute to mutual growth?
The transition to the new EDI system, even if it involves a cost, offers a more EDLC (Every Day Low Cost) friendly solution. By embracing this technology, suppliers can expect improved efficiency, reduced operational costs, and enhanced data accuracy. This in turn, leads to stronger relationships, increased competitiveness and ultimately, mutual growth.
5. What EDI standards are being used?
Walmart requires EDI to be set up using standard X12 format. You can work with your existing solution to test and certify or choose a third-party EDI solution that meets our formatting requirements.
6. What are the costs associated with EDI implementation and maintenance?
Associated costs vary subject to the final approach the supplier decides.
7. How will EDI integration impact our current systems and processes?
If you previously were set up on our EDIFACT EDI, your process does not change; however, you will need to test and certify our new specification and format. If you are new to EDI, your receipt and acknowledgement of the purchase order will be transitioned to EDI. The remaining processes will stay the same.
8. I do not currently have EDI. What do I do?
While we are confident in the long-term benefits of this transition, we recognize that readiness may vary. Our goal is to ensure a smooth transition while fostering collaboration and shared success.
For suppliers not yet prepared to implement EDI, we encourage open dialogue to explore future adoption plans and offer guidance on steps to prepare for integration. SupplierOne will continue to be available for order review and manual download via IPOD. We remain committed to supporting you through this process and ensuring an effective, strategic path forward.
9. I have EDI but cannot do a certain requirement. What do I do?
All documents and requirements are needed for you to meet EDI compliance. For suppliers whose current EDI solution is not able to meet requirements, they can evaluate and determine the appropriate connection approach or any EDI third-party service providers they wish to engage to achieve full compliance.
