Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Section 204 is a new food regulation intended to allow for faster identification and rapid removal of potentially contaminated food from the market, resulting in fewer foodborne illnesses and/or deaths. The regulation requires a significant shift in how Walmart Inc. and our suppliers effectively manage and track the journey the food takes to reach our customers and members. In response, we expect all food suppliers to comply with these enhanced traceability requirements.
What's Changed for Food Suppliers
A new “FSMA Section 204 Traceability” attribute has been added in our item catalog. Food suppliers must self-declare, at the item level, whether each item is on the Food Traceability List (i.e., subject to the FSMA 204 regulation).
Please note that suppliers of some (but not all) items in D94 Produce have a separate process for reviewing the FSMA attribute.
Refer to this Food Traceability Requirements page for more detailed information. As a reminder, these enhanced food traceability requirements are applicable to all food products. Walmart's monitoring and enforcement strategy will begin with products subject to the regulation.
